Council Committee to Hear Administration Plans to Identify Incorrect Homestead Exemptions

March 1, 2018

Councilmember-At-Large Stacy Head
NEW ORLEANS - Councilmember-at-Large Stacy Head has asked the Landrieu administration to provide an update on a city Request for Proposals (RFP) to reduce incorrect homestead exemptions in New Orleans at the Budget Committee meeting today, March 1, beginning at 1 p.m. or immediately following the Governmental Affairs Committee meeting.

Incorrect homestead exemptions cost the city millions in lost revenue every year and unfairly burden law-abiding taxpayers. The city could recover an estimated $9 Million in taxes already due to the city, after fees, in the first year and $3 Million annually thereafter, which would be divided among the taxing bodies.

Assessure Systems, the contractor selected to complete this work, has recovered millions in new tax revenue in other parishes across the state, including over $1.5 Million in Lafayette Parish, over $5 Million in Caddo Parish, and over $2 Million in St. Tammany Parish over the past few years.

"Tax fairness has been a high priority for me throughout my time on the City Council. All property owners should pay their fair share," said Head.
