Upcoming Community Adaptation Program Meeting for Gentilly Residents

July 19, 2018

District "D" Councilmember Jared C. Brossett
NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA) will be hosting a community workshop for Gentilly residents to discuss the Community Adaptation Program (CAP), announced at Tuesday's press conference. Residents are encouraged to attend the event taking place at 10 a.m. this Saturday, July 21 at Dillard University to learn more about the CAP and how to apply for residential stormwater management interventions of up to $25,000.

The CAP was made possible through a $141M grant the City received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 2016 to create the Gentilly Resilience District. The City was awarded the HUD grant largely due to the Living Wage Ordinance authored by District "D" Councilmember Jared Brossett in 2015. The law requires City contractors and recipients of tax breaks and grants to pay their workers at least $10.55/hour, adjusted upwards annually with inflation.

"I am extremely excited to join NORA in announcing this program which will connect District 'D' residents to critical resources to protect their properties and reduce stormwater runoff," said Councilmember Brossett. "This will have a tremendous impact in the Gentilly neighborhood, and throughout the entire City of New Orleans."

The projects of the Gentilly Resilience District are designed to reduce the risk of flooding and subsidence by creating spaces to capture rainwater in the urban landscape. Additional projects of the district include enhancements to the Dwyer Canal, green infrastructure and drainage improvements on the campus of Dillard University, training local residents in water infrastructure development, and integrated green infrastructure and recreational improvements to McDonogh 35 High School.
